Christ (Matt. 1 v. 16) Emmanuel (Matt. 1 v. 23): Christ means 'the anointed one'; Emmanuel means 'God with us'. Christ's baptism is shown for the central image of this painting (Matt. 3 vv. 13-17), because He, Himself, chose this means of identifying with us (Luke 3 v. 22). The consecrating oil runs down to cover the sacrificial blood of the cross, which stands in a field of daisies. N.B. the daisy, symbolising purity and innocence, has long been a recognised image of Christ.
